Scotmid Staff and Customers Raise Over £150,000 for Charity
Scotmid Co-operative Society has rounded off its 150th anniversary by raising over £150,000 for charity, thanks to its enthusiastic staff and generous customers.
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust, CLIC Sargent, Leukaemia Research and Alzheimer’s are just four of the charities who have benefited from the generosity of Scotmid, Morning Noon & Night and Semichem staff and customers over the last year.
Highlights of the year included a 150th anniversary charity ball which raised £35,000 for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent and dozens of the Society’s staff cycling in the Pedal for Scotland bike ride between Glasgow and Edinburgh in aid of Leukaemia Research.
John Brodie, Scotmid Chief Executive, said, “2009 was a very special year for the Society and its staff as we were celebrating our 150th anniversary. Part of our celebrations included supporting several different charities throughout the year. Our staff and customers rose to the challenge and we were on target to raise £150,000. The really good news is that in fact we beat our target – eventually raising just short of £160,000!”
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust received £70,000, largely from the collecting cans in stores. June Ross, Cystic Fibrosis Fundraising Manager for Scotland, commented, "The Cystic Fibrosis Trust are absolutely delighted with the total amount raised by Scotmid and would like to thank all their customers and staff who donated money. The funds raised will go towards our ground-breaking gene therapy programme taking place in Edinburgh, London and Oxford which hopes to find an effective treatment for Cystic Fibrosis and stop the disease from claiming so many young lives. The funds raised will make a real difference in helping us win the battle against Cystic Fibrosis."
