Health and Diet
Healthy eating should be important to us all. Eating healthily, together with a better lifestyle, may reduce your risk of developing heart disease, bowel disorders and cancer, as well as other less serious problems.
Contrary to popular opinion, you don't have to give up completely the foods you most enjoy, but aim instead to get the balance right overall.
The simplest way is to imagine a plate divided into five sections. This shows the proportion in which different food types should be eaten.
For everyone, this means eating more fruit & vegetables (at least 5 portions each day), and more starchy carbohydrate foods like bread, pasta, rice, cereals and potatoes. Also eat less fatty, sugary and salty foods - choose lower fat, lower sugar and lower salt versions where possible.
You don't need to achieve the balance every meal or even every day, but overall, your diet should be made up of the food groups in the quantities shown. Healthy eating does not always mean cutting down and going without.
