Scotmid Supports Fairtrade Fortnight
02/03/2010
Scotmid is marking Fairtrade Fortnight (22 February – 7 March) with several events, for some of which they are the main sponsor.
On 25 February Scotmid supported the Fairtrade brunch held at the National Library of Scotland and organised by the City of Edinburgh Council. Members of the public were able to drop in for a browse of the Fairtrade craft stalls and try out Fairtrade food and drink. The annual Fairtrade Awards which acknowledge the contribution that individuals and businesses make to Fairtrade throughout Edinburgh were also announced.
Scotmid is also supporting the Edinburgh Schools Fairtrade Showcase which takes place at Towerbank Primary School on 2 March. Most of Edinburgh’s schools will be present to show their support for and learn more about Fairtrade. Scotmid will be keeping the children busy making smoothies using its special smoothie bike which uses pedal power to make healthy drinks.
The Scottish Fairtrade University and College Conference at Edinburgh University's Teviot Union on 8 March is also supported by Scotmid. Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation is the keynote speaker.
St Colomba's Church on 5 March is the venue for a Fairtrade wine tasting organised by three churches in the south of Edinburgh with wine supplied by Scotmid.
Scotmid also continues to respond to requests from schools, community groups and Fairtrade groups for store vouchers and Fairtrade school packs. On 6 March we will be supporting an event run by Balerno FairTrade Group which will include Fairtrade stalls and tastings of Fairtrade wines, olive oils and teas.
John Brodie, Scotmid Chief Executive, said, "Scotmid has been a strong supporter of the Fairtrade concept for many years now and we stock a wide range of Fairtrade products in our stores. We are pleased to demonstrate our continuing commitment to Fairtrade in Edinburgh by supporting a wide range of events in the city. We hope that all these events will inspire even more businesses, organisations and individuals to do their bit for Fairtrade."
