Fairtrade - making a difference

Scotmid believes in giving you quality products that you can trust - for the right reasons.

As a consumer owned organisation, we are uniquely placed to campaign on behalf of our members and the wider community. Consequently, we are committed to providing full, honest and open information so that you can make informed choices about the products you choose when shopping.

We also believe in social responsibility and self help, so we want a better deal for growers and producers in developing countries. This is why we stock fair trade products in all our food stores. We are committed to fair trade which guarantees a better deal for producers and the Co-operative was the first retailer to develop an own-brand fair trade range.

Ethical trading is primarily aimed at helping waged workers rather than independent growers.

The Co-operative was the first major retailer to stock Fairtrade products in their stores in 1992. The Fairtrade products we now stock fall into nine main categories: Coffee, Tea, Confectionery, Beers/Wines/Spirits, Bananas, Fruits & Juices, Sugar, Composite Products and Branded Products.

Fairtrade Activities

The Society has been a champion of Fairtrade for many years and we support Fairtrade events throughout Scotland in schools and many other organisations. We were delighted to be the main sponsor of the Edinburgh Fairtrade Directory. We have also just announced that we will be sponsoring the Edinburgh Fairtrade breakfasts for the next three years. As a new member you can also make a difference in what we are trying to do in this very special area.
